Background of the study:
Examination malpractice remains a critical challenge that undermines the credibility of academic assessments and the integrity of the educational system. In Nnewi North, instances of cheating, impersonation, and other forms of academic dishonesty have raised serious concerns regarding the reliability of exam results (Eze, 2023). Such malpractice not only distorts the evaluation of students’ true capabilities but also creates an uneven playing field, demotivating hardworking students. The practice is often fueled by systemic issues, including inadequate supervision, high academic pressure, and cultural acceptance of shortcut methods. Educational authorities have attempted various interventions to curb these malpractices, yet the problem persists. The detrimental effects on academic performance and overall educational quality necessitate a comprehensive investigation into the underlying causes and consequences of examination malpractice. This study aims to critically assess how such practices impact student performance and to explore effective measures to combat academic dishonesty, thereby ensuring fairness and improving educational standards (Eze, 2023).

Statement of the problem:
Examination malpractice in Nnewi North has compromised the integrity of academic assessments and adversely affected student performance. The prevalence of cheating undermines the value of education, erodes trust in academic credentials, and creates an environment where merit is devalued. This study seeks to investigate the extent of examination malpractice and its direct impact on academic outcomes (Ibe, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the prevalence of examination malpractice.
  2. To evaluate its impact on student academic performance.
  3. To propose measures to mitigate malpractice in examinations.

Research questions:

  1. What is the extent of examination malpractice in Nnewi North?
  2. How does malpractice affect academic performance?
  3. What strategies can effectively reduce examination malpractice?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: Examination malpractice negatively impacts student academic performance.
  2. H₂: A high prevalence of malpractice correlates with lower overall academic standards.
  3. H₃: Implementing strict supervision measures reduces the incidence of malpractice.

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it provides a critical analysis of examination malpractice and its effects on academic performance. The findings will assist educational authorities in implementing effective measures to uphold examination integrity and improve academic standards in Nnewi North (Eze, 2023; Ibe, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to examining the effects of examination malpractice on academic performance in Nnewi North Local Government Area, Anambra State, and does not extend to other forms of academic dishonesty.

Definitions of terms:

  • Examination Malpractice: Unethical practices during examinations that compromise the integrity of results.
  • Academic Performance: The measurable achievements of students in academic assessments.
  • Supervision Measures: Procedures and protocols implemented to ensure examination integrity.
